At a Glance

Anaesthesia is a pharmacologically induced reversible state of amnesia, analgesia, loss of responsiveness, loss of skeletal muscle reflexes and decreased stress response. Anaesthesia basically is a “reversible lack of awareness,” whether this is a total lack of awareness (e.g. a general anaesthetic) or a lack of awareness of a part of the body such as a spinal anaesthetic or another nerve block would cause. This field of medicine seeks to help patients that are undergoing certain procedures and operations have a pain-free experience. It also able to provide care to patients in the form of relief from chronic pain.
