Dato’ Dr Ahmad Faizal bin Mohd Perdaus was trained as a specialist in Internal Medicine from 1996 to 2000 and subsequently in Respiratory Medicine from 2000 to 2004 at UKM. His academic history is indeed an impressive one where he completed his BMedSc, MD, and MMed at a prestigious university namely Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1989, 1992 and 2000.
His early achievements began early in his medical career with his appointment as the Deputy Director of Kluang Hospital, Johor from 1995 to 1996 while still a medical officer. In 2000, he joined UKM’s medical faculty as a lecturer, while in 2004 he was appointed as Head of the Department of Medical Education at the Faculty of Medicine, UKM. In 2006 to 2007, he was actively involved as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Sleep & Circadian Research Group, Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia. Furthermore, he was notably appointed as the personal respiratory physician to the previous DYMM Yang Di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan in 2005 to 2006, and was also accredited as a visiting Consultant Physician (Internal Medicine & Respiratory) at Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital in 2007.
In 2009, he left his position as Senior Lecturer and Respiratory Physician, Respiratory Unit, Department Of Medicine, UKM to join KPJ Johor Specialist Hospital (JSH) in Johor Baharu where he served as Consultant Physician in Internal Medicine, Respiratory and Sleep Medicine from April 2009 to July 2016.
In addition to his rigorous training, studies and career in medicine, Dato’ Dr Ahmad Faizal is an active humanitarian and joined MERCY Malaysia as a volunteer in 2003. He was soon appointed as an EXCO member of MERCY Malaysia in the same year and was appointed the President of MERCY Malaysia in 2009. Previously, he led MERCY Malaysia’s Drug Rehabilitation and Assistance Programme in Malaysia from 2003 to 2006 and participated in a number of local and international humanitarian aid mission such as Sri Lanka (2003), Iran (2004), Sudan (2004, 2008), Indonesia (2005, 2006), Pakistan (2005) , Myanmar (2008), Syria (2013) and Philippines (2013), and recently to Turkey (2017).
Dato’ Dr Faizal was also the first Asian to be elected as the Chairperson of the International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA). ICVA is one of three main NGO consortium that participates globally in the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC). The IASC is the highest decision making body in global humanitarian affairs which is chaired by the United Nations specifically the Under Secretary General for humanitarian affairs/Emergency Relief Coordinator.
Dato’ Dr Ahmad Faizal has also recently assumed chairmanship of PHAP (Professional in Humanitarian Action and Protection), the world’s biggest international network for individual professional humanitarian workers. He was awarded the Darjah Dato’ Paduka Mahkota Perak (DPMP) by HRH Sultan Azlan Shah in 2010.
